Fourth of July is right around the corner. It’s a day filled with fireworks, parades, BBQ, and just lots of fun with family and friends! Take a minute to recall what we are really celebrating – the independence of this great country.
What does independence mean to you? For most of us, it means we are in charge of our own lives. We make our own decisions – good or bad, right or wrong. We can do what we want, when we want, and with whom we want (within the limits of the law, of course).
It also means that you can choose who will make decisions for you if you can’t do so for yourself, and you can choose who gets what you have when you’re gone, and under what terms. But you can only do this if you take steps now and express your wishes on paper in legally enforceable documents. You can sign powers of attorney, other advance directives, a will and various trusts, all of which set forth your instructions to be followed by others in case you can no longer communicate your wishes.
As children and teenagers, we can’t wait to be all grown up so that nobody can tell us what to do. We want our independence. Well, you’re all grown up and independent and have been making your own choices for many years. Why stop now? Give some thought to what would happen and who would be in charge of your life if something happens that stops you from being in charge. Then take action.
Enjoy the holiday and the summer fun! We encourage you to also find time to call our office at (847) 253-8800 to schedule a free initial consultation with one of our estate planning attorneys.
